7 Iconic Glasgow Nightclubs

As many of you know, music has always been part of our DNA here at Forty Clothing. Our head-honcho Harry a favourite in our famous clubbing scene in Glasgow. That musical passion we have has now been integrated with our brand and often inspires much of what we do.

We take a look back a 7 iconic nightclubs that were once legendary in our city of Glasgow.

Cleopatra's Glasgow - Forty Clothing

Nicknamed “Clatty Pats”, this nightclub was located in the West End and was a local hotspot throughout the 80’s & 90’s in Glasgow. Cheap booze and cheesey tunes made Clatty Pats a popular hangout for students, it is still a popular student club however operates under new owners and is slightly more upmarket.

Volcano - nightclub glasgow

Staying in the West End, you may remember Volcano, the brainchild our good friend Colin Barr. The club was famously shown in the film Trainspotting, where Renton met Diane.

Archoas - Glasgow - nightclub - Forty Clothing

A look inside the former nightclub, Archoas was perhaps one of the cities most infamous hotspots. It has been reported that Charlie Sheen once spent the night in Archaos partying with Paul Gascoigne. Need we say more?

The Tuxedo Princess

The Tuxedo Princess – Floating Nightclub, Glasgow. Opened in 1988. Full revamp 1992. Closed 1998.

Destiny - Glasgow - NightClub

“My first nightclub” for an entire generation of Glaswegians, this was the place to go for foam parties, shot girls, ultra-cheap booze (a round of VK anyone?) and floors stickier than a painter’s radio.

Henry Afrikas

Not just the hottest nightclub in Glasgow, but one of the hottest in the Northern Hemisphere, Henry Afrikas was Mark Goldinger’s baby. Rod Stewart famously performed here in 1983.

The Arches

The Arches played host to club nights since 1992 with some nights being promoted by outside companies and others being in-house productions. Notable long-running regular clubs to be held in the venue included:

Slam at the Arches

One of the first club nights to be hosted in The Arches, Slam ran every Friday between 1992 and 1998. Originally the night was held in now defunct Glasgow venue Tin Pan Alley and later The Sub Club. It was hosted by local techno producers Slam but also featured regular guests, most notably Underworld and Daft Punk (in their first UK appearance in 1997).

In 1998, after six years of running Friday club nights at The Arches, Slam created a bigger, monthly event, Pressure, on the last Friday of every month. The night had at least two rooms of music playing mainly house and techno. Pressure saw some of the largest names in dance music play The Arches, including Jeff MillsCarl CraigDerrick CarterRichie HawtinLaurent GarnierFelix da HousecatRicardo Villalobos, Boys Noize, Vitalic, and Erol Alkan.[25][26]

Other club nights

Other well-established club nights at the Arches included:

  • Colours (1995)
  • Inside Out (1996)
  • Death Disco (2002)
  • Octopussy (2005)

Piping Live! x Forty Clothing

Piping Live! and Glasgow designer collaborate on bespoke bagpipe design to highlight mental health awareness

Piping Live! Glasgow International Piping Festival has teamed up with one of Glasgow’s top designers. While the brief was to create a cool new bag cover for bagpipes which aided comfort for the player, an inspired idea to incorporate a hidden mental health message in the cover aligned with the festival’s aim to support SAMH, the Scottish Association of Mental Health.

Each year Piping Live! is opened with the Big Band – a spectacular parade which sees players of all abilities, from piping novices to world champions, march through the streets of Glasgow to raise money for Piping Live’s chosen charity. This year, the Big Band will take to the streets in aid of the Scottish Association of Mental Health (SAMH), Scotland’s leading mental health charity, which offers mental health social care support across Scotland.

Owner of Forty clothing, Harry Miller, and his team have created the bespoke cover using a specially-made reflective material to create a hidden message on the bag, which is only visible when a photo is taken with the flash on.

The final design will be unveiled on the first day of Piping Live! when it returns to Glasgow from 13-19 August, bringing over 50,000 music fans, families and tourists to the city to enjoy 200 events and 8,000 performers.

The collaboration is part of Piping Live!’s #MomentsThatMatter campaign, which celebrates bagpipes being at the heart of so many of life’s big moments.  This year’s campaign theme is based around VisitScotland’s Year of Young People, which celebrates the very best of Scotland and its young people through a year-long programme of cultural activities.

Since many young adults who are battling mental health issues turn to music as a way of self-expression, Piping Live! is inviting them to be part of the piping community, whether that be signing up to take part in the Big Band, attending one of the many concerts on offer such as Fred MorrisonAssynt or Hamish Napier, or celebrating the music of the highlands and the language of Piping at the Ceòl nam Pìobairean, Piping Live! has something for everyone. The festival is also encouraging pipers to share their stories and the positive impact that being part of a pipe band has had on their lives.

Roddy MacLeod Festival Director of Piping Live said;

“We’re thrilled to bring back the Piping Live! Big Band which, this year, is in association with SAMH. Mental health is a huge topic for us at Piping Live! and we feel strongly about encouraging young people to talk openly about their mental health.

“Harry is so passionate in what he does, a quality that is shared by the pipers who participate in Piping Live! or the fans that travel across the world for the festival. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this year’s festival – whether you’re an experienced piper or someone who is looking to try something new – there’s an opportunity for everyone to take part in Piping Live!”

 Harry Miller, Owner of Forty said;

“We’re excited to be joining forces with the team at Piping Live! to help tackle the stigma around mental health in young people.  It’s an honour to be asked to collaborate with Piping Live! Mental health is something that is incredibly close to my heart. Their partnership with SAMH for the Big Band project is a great opportunity for everyone to get involved with Piping Live! whilst raising awareness of an issue that affects so many young people.

“The design of the bag is symbolic of how someone suffering from mental health problems can look perfectly happy on the outside or on social media but on the inside, it can often be a different story. I can’t wait to unveil the final design at Piping Live! next month – see you then.”

Camo, its history & Forty Clothing

Did you know, the very first camouflage was used by hunters to disguise themselves from their prey and could take the form of foliage or mud smeared over their bodies, to hide their scent as well as their appearance? Well, now you know. However, we must admit, that’s not the reason we use camo in our product design here at Forty.

Camo is very much back on-trend this Autumn/Winter season, however Disruptive Pattern Material (DPM) has been an inspiration here at Forty Clothing since the very beginning and for us, and is not just an in-season style. From our monster logo to our newly launched Edmund winter jacket, camo boldly plays its part in the Forty Family.

Glasgow Fashion Designers You Should Know | Culture Trip

Forty Clothing were delighted to recently feature in an article on Culture Trip, one of the world’s fastest growing online media outlets. The website itself has around 7,000,000 monthly visitors so when we read the article we were very privileged to be part of it. The article titled “Glasgow Fashion  Designers You Should Know”  featured Forty, alongside some other outstanding designers from our hometown of Glasgow. You can read Forty’s feature from Culture Trip below, and read the full article here. Thanks for all your support.

Forty Clothing, a hip street-style brand, is all the rage these days. It’s also the reason why style stunners are sauntering about Glasgow and Scotland with a loveable monster logo imprinted on their t-shirts! This trendy logo, the reason for the brand, is actually a drawing by the 3-year-old son of company founder and renowned Scottish DJ Harry Miller. Miller collaborated with a graphic design friend and alas, the rest is history. Forty instantly garnered respect and is popular with DJs and notables in the clubbing scene. The flagship concept store is too cool for words.”

12 of the Best Pictures from the Ibiza Opening Parties

We’re now into June and the Ibiza summer season is well and truly underway.  So far we’ve seen the prestigious Dalt Vila host another famous IMS party, we’ve danced with Sven Vath at Cocoon for the 18th season and perhaps one of the biggest talking points this summer has been the opening of  Hï Ibiza – the islands latest superclub in the heart of Playa D’en Bossa (formerly Space Ibiza).

Forty Clothing are excited to be involved in another season on the island. This year we’ve again partnered with Carl Cox & Game Over, and we can’t wait for Carl Cox Opening Party in Privilege Ibiza this July, where our very own Harry will be gracing the decks in the World’s biggest club. (Remember to check out our t-shirt range for your trip to the island)
